Basically, gateways with integrated controller are called SmartNode and gateways without controller are called SmartConnector. SmartConnector gateways are used for pure data forwarding without evaluation or intelligent functions. In addition to data evaluation and control of IoT devices, SmartNode gateways also provide access to so-called SmartNode modules.

These modules provide uniform interfaces across products for system management and expansion. Among other things, such modules provide the web configuration for system administration and the
